The Legacy Presbyterian Church in Frisco, the new church being launched by Grace Presbyterian church and Grace Presbytery, is becoming a reality.
Rev. Kent Miller has recently accepted the postion of Interim Pastor. Over 2000 mailings have been sent out to invite families in the Northwest Frisco area to become part of the Legacy church. Bible studies are being held in the homes of the core group of committed members. Funding for this new church development has been granted by the Grace Presbytery, the Synod of the Sun, and the General Assembly of the PC(USA).
The Legacy Task Group has also been meeting on a monthly basis to work on creating the timeline of church planning including building proposals, programs and mission statements of the church
Please continue to pray for the growth of the church as we continue to seek God’s will in all of the decisions being made for the future of Legacy.
If you are interested in volunteering or helping in anyway, we would love to have your support. Also, if you know of new families you would like to refer who are new in this area, we would welcome them to our church.
For additional information, please contact Rev. Kent Miller or visit the Legacy Presbyterian Church web site.
Background
The Legacy Presbyterian Church in northwest Frisco is an evangelistic mission whose primary purpose will be to make followers of Jesus Christ from the unchurched or de-churched in Frisco, Little Elm, The Colony and north Plano.
Vision
As part of his doctoral dissertation Larry Thorson, in his role as Associate Pastor of Evangelism and Mission, developed a model for starting a new church. The concept was to form a daughter church from Grace Presbyterian church, using the staff and members of the mother church to be the catalyst to begin the new church. The name Legacy was chosen because of the history of churches forming daughter churches in the Dallas area over the past 75 years (see History of Legacy).
The new church model was based on using the Grace Presbyterian church staff for the first two years. At that time Legacy should be large enough to hire its own staff. Larry Thorson, in his role as Associate Pastor of Evangelism and Mission, was the staff catalyst who gathered the initial core.
With Larry Thorson being called to the senior pastorate of another church in 2005, the plans had to be modified somewhat. Grace Presbytery is partnering with Grace for a five year grant from the denomination to call a full-time pastor to oversee the start of the new church. This new pastor would still be based at Grace Presbyterian Church but his/her primary responsibility will be to start the new church.
Funding
Primary funding for this outreach project will come from those who are doing ministry in the new church. In addition to presbytery and denominational funding, Grace Presbyterian Church is contributing staff time and funds from the Missions budget. The Planning team for the church will be looking for a construction loan to pay for the first building on the site.
Location
Grace Presbytery has purchased 11 acres at the corner of Legacy Dr. and Eldorado Parkway just west of what will be the Dallas North Tollway. Until we are ready to build on the site the new church will meet in a temporary location. Grace Presbytery is providing us with two supply trailers loaded with everything necessary, including a sound system, to set up a portable church in a school.
Members
Since the purpose of this church is to reach out to the unchurched, the new church is being built around the Alpha Course program which is a ten week course in the basics of the faith. It addresses the question of what to say when you are asked about God.
Would you like to help?
You don't have to leave your church to do so. Here are some ways that you can help:
- Pray for a loan, quick approval by the city of Frisco for a billboard on the site, and a spirit filled Alpha course.
- Nursery workers when we begin worship services
- Children's Sunday School teachers when we begin worship services, volunteering for one month.
- Choirs and musicians of all ages willing to rotate between their service and a Legacy service similar to the 8:30 service at Grace.
- Sound board technicians for Sunday worship.
Pray about it and let’s talk
